Some patients may not be good candidates for LASIK because their cornea is too flat or thin. Patients with this condition can undergo LASEK, an alternative vision correction treatment similar to LASIK. Although both procedures treat the corneal tissue beneath a flap made in the outer layer, with LASEK the flap is thinner. Only the exterior of the cornea, the epithelium, is used to create the hinged flap. After the underlying corneal tissue is exposed, the treatment proceeds as it would with LASIK. An excimer laser is used to reshape the cornea, and the flap is replaced.
If you are interested in vision correction with LASEK,contact Red River Eye and Laser Center in Bossier City, Louisiana for a consultation. Our specialists can evaluate your condition and recommend the appropriate treatment.
PRK is an effective laser eye surgery treatment offered at our Shreveport area office. This treatment offers gradual vision improvement over the duration of days or months. It is generally recommended for patients with large pupils or thin corneas, and is similar to LASEK in that the hinged flap is created using just the epithelium. The PRK procedure then involves use of an excimer laser to reshape the cornea through accurate removal of corneal tissue. This improves the eye’s ability to focus light on the retina, producing better visual acuity. PRK was the first excimer laser procedure available. Shreveport area residents now have many options available to them such as LASIK – an extremely popular procedure due to faster results and recovery time. PRK is offered to our Shreveport area patients who are not good candidates for LASIK.

Our practice has decided to no longer provide conductive keratoplasty (CK) as a treatment option for correcting reading vision. The effects of CK typically fade during the course of time, leading our ophthalmologists to seek a more advanced procedure. A superior and more precise technique known as monovision LASIK offers permanent results and creates blended vision for reading. Learn more about monovision.
